Couple’s Activity: Local Art Show

Last week we went to a local theater to see a play. A local art gallery or art show is along the same lines and can also be a lot of fun!

Is there an art gallery that you have been walking or driving past for years? Grab your “activity” partner and go check it out!

Destination Art ShowMany of our previous “Couple’s Activities” needed some preparation, i.e. ice chests, hats, blankets etc. Well… you don’t need to bring anything to an art show except for your appreciation! (And your glasses if you need them…).

One of the most enjoyable times at an art gallery is when a featured artist is there, showing their best or latest work. If you would like to see an art show where a featured artist is present, look it up on the web, in local events directories or call the gallery and ask.

If you are lucky enough to see an art show with the artist there, you can often talk with the artist and ask them questions. It’s fun to hear about what inspires them, when they feel inspired and a little bit about how they create their work.  You will often learn something!

The last art show I went to, I found out that the artist put the canvas on the floor to do the painting. She demonstrated by placing the painting on the floor and bending over to demonstrate how she would paint – who would have thought? We very much enjoyed seeing the work of Anne Johnson at Art Beat On Main Street.

Even if the type of art isn’t your favorite, you can still get the feeling of talent, skill and drive that it takes to produce a piece of art for a show or gallery. For example, if you like wildlife art and the featured art is modern, you can ask the artist what their piece means to them. You will probably be amazed by their answer and they like being asked.

It is common to observe art very quietly, like being in a library, but believe me, you will get so much more out of the experience if you get involved. This can be another way to learn about what your partner likes, and it’s sure to tell your partner what you like and why.

Singles; this can be a really great place to meet people who are interested in beauty. Not necessarily finding someone who enjoys the same style of art as you, that can happen, but that’s not important. Finding someone who likes getting out, enjoying life and enjoying beauty, that’s what is important.

You might discover that a new artist is featured every few weeks, or once a month and you can plan on coming out to these shows regularly. Some art shows will have pleasant music, wine and canapés – that’s always fun!

After the gallery, talk about the art with your partner – it is a great topic. Art is an idea with feeling: remember, great minds talk about ideas, good minds talk about events and weak minds talk about other people.

I’d love to hear from you! Be sure to let me know how your Couple’s Activities are going by leaving a comment below…
